Drivers are the translators between Windows and your hardware. They tell the operating system how to communicate with the chipset, graphics card, network adapter, audio controller, and other devices on the motherboard. Windows installs some generic drivers automatically, which is useful for getting started, but those defaults are not always the best choice for a new build.

The order matters less than installing the correct files from the correct manufacturer, but a sensible sequence makes troubleshooting much easier. If something goes wrong, you know which change happened last. Here is the order I use after a clean Windows installation.

Before step one

Prepare the Driver Files First

Download the important drivers before you wipe an old installation or assemble a machine that may not have internet access yet. Use the support pages for your motherboard, processor platform, graphics card, and network adapter. Put the installers on a USB drive, and record which files you downloaded.

You do not need every utility listed on a motherboard support page. Focus on the chipset driver, network driver, audio driver, and any storage or platform driver that your hardware specifically requires. Avoid driver download websites that bundle installers or offer a mystery update tool. The manufacturer is the safer source.

Step one

Install Windows Updates

Start with Windows Update, including optional hardware updates if they are clearly identified for your machine. This gives you the basic operating system patches and may install a temporary network or display driver so the rest of the process is easier.

Restart when Windows asks you to, then check again. A new installation often has more than one round of updates waiting. Do not worry if the display looks basic at this stage. The proper graphics driver comes later.

Step two

Install the Chipset Driver

The chipset driver is the foundation of the platform. It helps Windows manage communication between the processor, motherboard, USB controllers, storage interfaces, power states, and other system devices. It is not a graphics driver, and it should not be skipped just because the PC appears to work.

Get it from the processor platform manufacturer or the motherboard support page. If both provide a version, check the motherboard notes and use the package recommended for your platform. Run the installer, accept the requested restart, and let the system settle before installing anything else.

After the restart, open Device Manager and look for unknown devices. If the chipset package worked, several generic-looking entries should now have more specific names. You do not need to understand every entry, but a large yellow warning list means the basic platform setup is not finished.

Step three

Install the Network Driver

Next, install the Ethernet or Wi-Fi driver that matches your motherboard or network card. This is especially important if Windows used a generic driver. A generic connection can be good enough to download files, but it may lack stable performance, power management, or the features of the actual adapter.

If you are currently offline, use the USB drive you prepared earlier. Once the network works, connect with Ethernet if possible while you finish setup. A wired connection removes one extra variable when Windows Update and driver installers are downloading in the background.

Step four

Install the Graphics Driver

The graphics driver is the one most gamers notice. Before it is installed, Windows may use a basic display driver with limited resolution, refresh rate, and acceleration. Install the driver directly from the graphics card manufacturer and choose the package for the exact operating system and GPU family.

Most graphics installers offer an express option and a custom option. Custom installation can be useful if you want a clean installation or do not want extra recording and overlay features. If this is a brand new build, express installation is usually fine. Restart after it completes, then open the graphics control panel and confirm that your monitor is running at its intended resolution and refresh rate.

Do not install multiple graphics packages at once. If you are changing from one graphics brand to another, remove the old driver first. On a brand new Windows installation, there should not be an old package to remove.

Step five

Install Audio Drivers

Install the motherboard audio driver after the main platform and graphics drivers. Windows audio may work without it, but the manufacturer package can enable the rear audio ports, front-panel detection, microphone controls, and other board-specific features.

Test both the rear output and the front-panel jack if you plan to use them. Check the input device too. A microphone that appears in Windows but has no signal may be plugged into the wrong port or may need a permission setting, not another driver.

Step six

Install Storage and Special Device Drivers

Most modern storage drives work through the normal Windows storage stack. If your motherboard or storage manufacturer provides a specific driver for a controller you actually use, install it now. Do not add a storage driver just because it appears in a long support-page list.

The same rule applies to Bluetooth, card readers, capture cards, and other add-in devices. Install only what is physically present in the build. If Device Manager shows an unknown device, identify its hardware ID or check the motherboard manual before guessing.

Step seven

Install Useful Motherboard Utilities Last

Motherboard utilities are optional. Fan control, lighting, monitoring, and update applications can be useful, but they also add background services and startup items. Install one only when you have a clear reason to use it.

For example, use a fan-control tool if the BIOS options do not give you the curve you need. Use an RGB utility if you actually want software control of the lighting. Avoid installing several overlapping tools that all try to monitor temperatures or control the same fans. The simpler the software setup, the easier it is to diagnose a problem.

Finish with a Device Manager Check

Open Device Manager and expand the main categories. There should be no unknown devices or yellow warning icons. Check Display adapters, Network adapters, Sound, storage controllers, and Universal Serial Bus controllers. An entry with a generic name is not automatically a problem, but a warning icon deserves attention.

Then test the parts you assembled. Confirm both network connections if you have them, play audio through the output you use, check the microphone, open a game or graphics test, and transfer a file to the storage drive. A short test now catches a loose cable or missing driver before you spend hours installing games.

Should You Update Every Driver?

No. Driver updates can fix bugs, add hardware support, and improve particular games, but newer is not always better for every device. Keep the current installer for a working driver, read the release notes when an update appears, and change one driver at a time when troubleshooting.

The best fresh-build routine is simple: Windows Update, chipset, network, graphics, audio, then only the special devices and utilities you need. Restart between major packages, keep installers from official sources, and verify Device Manager at the end. That gives you a stable baseline for the rest of your setup.
